Wearing braces is a big step toward a straighter, healthier smile—but keeping them clean takes a little extra effort. At Holland Orthodontics, we want to make sure your smile stays strong and healthy throughout your orthodontic journey.
Whether you’re just starting out or have been in treatment for a while, here are the best ways to take care of your braces and keep your teeth sparkling clean.
Why Braces Care Matters
Braces create small spaces where food and plaque can easily get trapped. If not cleaned properly, this can lead to:
- Tooth decay
- Gum inflammation
- Staining or white spots around brackets
- Delayed treatment time
Good oral hygiene protects your teeth during treatment and helps ensure your results last for years to come.
The Best Tools for Cleaning Braces
Here’s what we recommend at Holland Orthodontics to keep braces clean and your mouth healthy:
1. Orthodontic Toothbrush or Electric Toothbrush
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush with an orthodontic head. These are specially designed to clean around brackets and wires more effectively.
Tip: Brush at a 45-degree angle to get both above and below the braces.
2. Floss Threaders or Orthodontic Floss
Regular flossing is still essential—even with braces. Use:
- Floss threaders
- Pre-cut orthodontic floss
- Or a water flosser (like Waterpik) for easier daily use
These tools help remove food and plaque from between the teeth and under the wires.
3. Interdental Brushes (Proxabrushes)
These small, cone-shaped brushes can be inserted between brackets and wires to remove food and buildup. They’re perfect for cleaning areas your regular toothbrush can’t reach.
4. Mouthwash
Use an alcohol-free, antibacterial mouthwash daily to reduce plaque and gingivitis. Look for mouthwashes with fluoride to help protect your enamel during treatment.
5. Orthodontic Wax
While not a cleaning tool, orthodontic wax can prevent irritation and sores caused by brackets or wires. This makes cleaning more comfortable and encourages better hygiene habits.
Daily Braces Care Routine
Here’s what your daily care should look like:
Morning & Night:
- Brush for 2 minutes, including gum-line and all sides of brackets
- Floss between all teeth
- Rinse with mouthwash
After Meals:
- Rinse with water to dislodge food
- Use an interdental brush or floss pick if needed
Avoid:
- Sticky, chewy, or hard foods that can damage your braces
- Whitening toothpaste (can unevenly whiten areas around brackets)
