Orthopedics for Children in Indianapolis & Carmel
Guiding Jaw Growth at the Right Time
Orthodontic orthopedics focuses on guiding proper jaw growth and facial development in children. These treatments are designed to correct growth patterns early—while the jaws are still developing—so future orthodontic treatment is often shorter, simpler, and more stable.
We recommend that every child receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this age, we can begin to spot developing concerns and, if needed, plan treatment for the most effective stage of growth.
What Happens at the First Orthopedic Evaluation?
At your child’s initial records appointment, our team will gather:
- Digital orthodontic X-rays
- Diagnostic models
- Clinical photographs
These records allow us to:
- Accurately diagnose dental and skeletal concerns
- Evaluate jaw growth and facial balance
- Determine the ideal timing for orthopedic treatment, if needed
Early diagnosis allows us to intervene only when necessary and only at the most effective time.
Palatal Expanders for Narrow Upper Jaws
An expander is an orthopedic appliance used when the upper jaw is too narrow to properly fit the lower jaw. This type of treatment is most effective during mixed dentition, when both baby teeth and permanent teeth are present.
Benefits of upper jaw expansion include:
- Improved bite alignment
- Reduced risk of future crowding
- Even tooth wear over a lifetime
- Increased width of the nasal airway
- Improved airflow for children who snore or experience chronic nasal congestion
Because the upper jaw is more adaptable at younger ages, expansion is safest and most effective when performed early.
Bite Correctors for Lower Jaw Growth
For children with an underdeveloped lower jaw, orthopedic bite correctors may be recommended. Common appliances include the Herbst appliance and the MARA appliance.
These appliances work by:
- Positioning the lower jaw forward
- Encouraging natural lower jaw growth
- Improving facial balance and bite alignment
Bite correctors are most effective during the adolescent growth spurt, when jaw growth and bone metabolism are at their peak. This timing varies by child but often occurs between ages 11 and 13.
